War in the Middle East

In 2025 the war in Gaza continued into its second year, with civilian deaths now in the tens of thousands. There was also armed conflict between Israel and Iran in June.

The war has been deeply felt in Australia. There have been protests on the streets and many politicians and public figures have spoken out, expressing concern and condemnation.

How to comment on and represent war – and respond to the debates surrounding it – is one of the greatest challenges for a creative artist, particularly those working in a medium where humour is usually a key tool. Over the last two years, the war in Gaza has been an inescapable issue. Ever present in the media, it remains one of the most covered topics by Australian cartoonists in 2025.
