Since 2007, when Hamas came to power, Israel has imposed a naval blockade of Gaza to stop arms entering the coastal enclave. On 2 March 2025 it imposed a total aid blockade. Within three months, the World Health Organization was reporting starvation, acute malnutrition and deaths in Gaza. In June Freedom Flotilla activists sailed a yacht carrying humanitarian aid for Gaza that was intercepted by Israel. Among the detained activists was Swedish climate change campaigner Greta Thunberg. Israel declared the aid on the ‘selfie yacht’ would be transferred to Gaza ‘through real humanitarian channels’
