La DGSE face aux calumnies [The DGSE confronts the slander]

A man in a trenchcoat holds a sign that reads, 'Défendons notre outil de travail'. A group of identical men hold a larger sign that reads, 'Non à la casse de notre enterprise.'

The 'French Connections' Four Corners program of 1985 won that year's Gold Walkley Award. An international exclusive, it exposed the role of the French government and its intelligence agency, Direction générale de la Sécurité extérieure (DGSE, Directorate General for External Security), in the bombing of Greenpeace's Rainbow Warrior in New Zealand, which also killed photographer Fernando Pereira. The DGSE saboteurs were pursued to Nouméa and France.

This cartoon by famous French cartoonist Cabu depicts DGSE outrage over what was seen as 'slander' by the media. The signs read: 'Defend our tools of the trade' and 'Hands off our organisation'. In 2015 Cabu was killed in a terrorist attack on the office of satirical investigative publication Charlie Hebdo.
