Hook your students into exploring what a referendum is and how they work through cartooning.
In this digital workshop, your students will discuss the techniques used by cartoonists, practice their visual analysis skills and learn about the role of political cartoons as an example of media in our democracy.
Political cartoons are an accessible way for students of all ages to develop their critical thinking and medial literacy skills. We have selected a range of cartoons, as well as developed exclusive content with one of Australia’s leading cartoonists to help students explore referendums, what they are and how they work.
Your students will become cartoonists and create a collaborative drawing with the MoAD Learning team, while also developing their media literacy and critical thinking skills. They will design their own cartoon to investigate how they can have a say on issues that are important to them.
Students will:
-
develop civic literacy by visiting special places in the building
-
explore the role of the media in our democracy
-
build media literacy skills by examining current political cartoons for techniques and meaning
-
develop visual analysis and media literacy skills using contemporary cartoons and exclusive content
-
engage in collaborative construction to develop media creation skills.
The Drawn Together: Exploring Referendums program has been made possible through the generous support of the Clem Jones Foundation. The development of the program has been guided by the Media Literacy Framework for Australia. MoAD is a proud partner of the Australian Media Literacy Alliance.
