David Littleproud has been the Nationals leader since taking over from Barnaby Joyce in 2022. The Nationals, formerly the Country Party, have formed a strong Coalition with the Liberals since 1944, but the partnership threatened to unravel after the 2025 election defeat and a brief rift over key policy positions. They patched things up, but Knight suggested the drama was worthy of a Mills and Boon romance novel.
