History - Markings

An Aboriginal man walks sadly away from rock art which reads 'Yoorook Justice Commission'. A quote above reads, 'For communities who have lived these truths, the findings offer not shock, but relief. The violence is no longer just remembered; it has been recorded. Marcus Stewart, former co-chair of the First Peoples' Assembly.'

Established in 2021, the Yoorrook Justice Commission was Australia’s first formal Indigenous-led truth-telling inquiry into the historical and ongoing injustices faced by First Nations people in Victoria. The inquiry received thousands of submissions and testimonies. Its final reports, released in July 2025, documented the injustices and made 100 recommendations for reform.
