The first months of Benjamin Netanyahu’s sixth term as prime minister of Israel, which began in December 2022, centred on judicial reform, including measures to limit judicial powers. This drew widespread criticism and mass protests across Israel. In July 2023, at the height of this civil unrest, Netanyahu was rushed to hospital to be fitted for a pacemaker. It was the first time the Israeli people were told he had longstanding cardiac problems.
