In a sea of people on mobile phones, David Pope depicts the social media companies TikTok and Facebook as large combine harvesters, extracting users’ personal data. In April 2023 Attorney General Mark Dreyfus authorised a ban of the TikTok app on all Australian Government department and agency devices. The government stated that Chinese-owned TikTok ‘poses significant security and privacy risks’. The ban did not apply to non-Chinese social media apps.
