In September 2020 the Prime Minister announced a ‘gas-fired recovery’ as key to bouncing back from the COVID-19 recession. Eight months later, a commitment was made for a $600-million, taxpayer-funded, gas-fired power plant in New South Wales’ Hunter Valley. With new technologies emerging and the cost of renewable energy decreasing, critics questioned the economic sense of such a project.
