In the lead-up to the October budget, speculation mounted that tax cuts would be a key feature. Treasurer Josh Frydenberg was in the unenviable position of releasing a budget as Australia entered recession for the first time in almost 30 years. Wilcox notes that Frydenberg, who holds a degree in economics, has one answer for any situation. As he put it, ‘If you put more money into people’s pockets there will be more spending and more spending will create jobs.’
